Questions about this pattern
Why does the hem cast on so many stitches?
The hem is cast on in 1x1 rib on three stitches for every two the body needs, and one round takes them out: [k1, k2tog] to the end. Rib at 13 stitches to 4 inches and stockinette at 8 are not the same width per stitch, so the hem finishes at about 92% of the chest at every size - snug enough to sit, loose enough to pull on.
Does the mohair halo matter?
Yes - it's the point. At 8 stitches to 4 inches the stitches are big and loose, and the brushed halo fills them in so the fabric reads as solid cloth rather than a net. A smooth yarn at this gauge would look sheer.
How are the neck and armholes finished?
Three rounds of garter stitch, picked up and knitted after the shoulders are joined. The pattern includes a drawn comparison of a plain bound-off edge and a garter band, so you can see why the band is worth the half hour.
